Meabh Rua Irish Bog Ale

The White Hag

A Strong or ''double'' Irish Red Ale. Intensely malty with caramel notes and hints of peat smoke with a slight alcoholic warmth.

Historically, this beer would have derived it's earthy and 'bog-like' notes from the soft waters of the bog lands in the northwest of Ireland. Hops, not native to Ireland were used sparingly due to the prohibitive cost to import. The intense malty, caramel and toffee notes were derived from the direct-fired kettles (or coppers as they were known). This style is similar to the common 'Irish Red Ale' with its use of amber and brown malts, but brewed to higher strength to provide warmth and nourishment for the drinker throughout the long Irish winters.

Deeply malty notes of rich caramel and toffee with hints of peat smoke and roasted malts. Earthy, full-bodied, with a somewhat chewy mouthfeel and slight alcoholic warmth. Flavours intensify as the beer warms.

Goes well with roasted or grilled beef, lamb, venison, smoked salmon, aged sheep cheese. Best served at 10°C.
