About Brehon Rising

In November 1915, Patrick Pearse visited County Monaghan, addressing a large crowd in Carrickmacross, before passing through Killanny and Dunelty on his way to stay in Inniskeen, the native village of Patrick Kavanagh, who was a schoolboy of eleven at the time. Pearse spoke of the need for Irishmen to prepare to fight for Irish freedom. It was two months before he and other members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood managed to encourage James Connolly, the leader of the Irish Citizen Army to join them in rebellion. Both of Connolly’s parents had been born in Monaghan before they emigrated to Scotland after the Great Famine. Pearse and Connolly signed the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic and both were executed for their role in the rebellion. In their writings and political ideologies both men often romanticised about a much earlier period in Irish history when the country was governed by Brehon law.
